Rezension: Edit this long essay?“Imma’ let you finish” but Kanye West’s song “Power”, may be one of the most csotrnveroial and politically deceptive music videos to hit the internet. The music video has many images and symbols that are only noticeable upon careful observation. Not only does the video contain shots of religious figures and archetypal symbolism, but carefully hidden symbols and images that many occult theorists would have a lot to talk about. The song “Power” seems to suggest some connection between Kanye West, and secret government organizations. By decoding the occult meaning of the symbols in this moving tableau, the viewer discovers who holds the “power” in the world and understands the initiation of Kanye West into the organization known as “The Masons”. In the song “Power”, Kanye West is shown standing monumentally with a heavy necklace and wearing dark garbs. Pillars seem to stretch out endlessly behind him. As he sings, the camera slowly zooms out in an unedited take to show him to be in a classical-roman themed domain. He is surrounded by females who are either partly nude or entirely nude; some kneel before him on all fours, others wear devil horns, and others are suspended upside down from the ceiling. A sword spirals over Kanye West’s head, and behind him is an executioner, who is preparing to strike him with a dagger. What is Kanye West really representing? The video starts out with a close-up shot of Kanye West’s face, with glow in the dark eyes, as if he was being illuminated . He stands at the start, between two long rows of pillars, which are known to represent “wisdom”. The pillars and his position between the pillars could represent the gateway to the world of his initiation. Behind the columns, can be found Kanye West’s goal to achieve “power”. In the beginning of the video, Kanye West is standing right in front of these pillars. This could suggest that Kanye West has begun his ascension into “The Masons”. The first thing the viewer might see is the huge necklace around Kanye West’s head. The viewers might not realise it, but the head of Horus is inscribed on the pendant of the chain. Horus is the Sky God; he is more often represented with the symbol of a single eye, “The Eye of Horus”. The Eye of Horus is used to represent ancient symbols of protection and royal power from deities. “The Eye of Horus is especially of great importance in Freemasonry, as the path of an initiate through the Masonic degrees is described as the process by which the Eye of Horus is opened.” Kanye stands at the gateway between the mundane world of the heathen and the exclusive world of the illuminated, wearing a Horus pendant. The entrance of the gateway of pillars is guarded by two horned women holding staffs. Their features are very similar to the depictions of Isis and Hathor (another allusion to Egyptian magic). Isis is described as the mother of Horus, and the goddess of motherhood, nature and magic. Hathor is described as goddess of music, dance and fertility. Both Isis and Hathor are known to welcome and protect the dead during their journey to the afterlife, a concept which seems to have a strong purpose in video. Kanye, perhaps symbolizing the Pharaoh, is standing at the gateway to eternal wisdom, about to be assassinated/sacrificed under the watchful eyes of Hathor, the “Royal Goddess.” The goddesses could be welcoming Kanye and protecting him in this rite of passage to immortality. In many cults, new candidates usually symbolically die (sometimes literally) and become reborn to complete their initiation process. Kanye West could be getting killed as a symbol for his initiation.
